santorum for the republican nomination. he didn't get a bounce after he picked paul ryan or after the convention, but he is after this debate. so we are seeing a lot of movement right now, but i think the best gauge of where this race will be is when we move on a week or two from now where we see where all the dust settled after a volatile period in the numbers. >> i thought you were going to say when our new nbc news poll comes out that's what we know. with that said the pugh poll says if the election were held today, that's 49/45 amongst likely voters. amongst registered voters barack obama 46%, mitt romney 46%. the gallup daily tracking likely voters, obama 47, romney 49. if you can keep up up at this point, 49/46. the state polls caught your eye as well, michigan in particular. you look at those numbers. >> right. in the michigan poll it was a survey that had president obama holding onto a narrow three-point lead down from a 10--point lead earlier last month. that poll was kind of what we saw. i was talking to a republican looking at all the polling numbers and races who said,

joe biden goes head to head with congressman paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. of course, our anticipation is heightened by the loss that the champ took in round one on wednesday night. president obama pulled a lot of his punches in his debate with governor romney, so if the original strategy was for biden to go in with a soft touch against paul ryan, we can be sure that that is going out the window. he is coming out swinging. gloves off. now, romney was able to dodge blows against his economic plan because actually there's not much of a plan there to jab at. take his strategy for economic recovery, to fill the revenue gap for a result from tax cuts is an exercise in shadow boxing futility. he hasn't yet told us what it is he's planning to do. but by hitching his wagon to paul ryan and endorsing ryan's budget plan, he attached himself to clearly articulated policy and a record that leaves the whole ticket exposed to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice presi

and the president wrapping up final debate practice yesterday, joe biden was in north carolina and paul ryan in iowa. they traded jabs over the middle class. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been buried. we agree. >> mitt romney is under pressure to give more details into both his tax reform proposal and plans for the middle class. yesterday, he finally offered up an idea saying in order to pay for his reform each taxpayer would have a limit on how much they could deduct. the number he threw out was $17,000 and compared that to a bucket saying you can take whatever deductions you want but once you hit $17,000 that's it. we heard his plan for undocumented immigrants. he would not revoke the temporary limitations adopted by the president but if elected there would be no more protections. we're coming back after the break. >> i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for capella university. i go to work every day and know that i make a difference. when patients leave this office they have hope in their eyes. it make me feel like i'm really doi

the moderator gives governor romney a chance to do what paul ryan said he didn't have time to do and that is explain how they pay for a $5 trillion tax cut. as you pointed out, ed, it is a time problem that is vexing in this budget. it's a math problem. they can't pay for it. if they can't pay for it to provide the tax cut for the rich then they're going to raise taxes on the middle class. that's what the economic studies have shown. look, i don't know anybody who thinks we' we're another tax cu a millionaire away from a stronger middle class. >> watch ed schultz every night at 8:00 p.m. eastern on "the ed show" on msnbc. >>> a judge in pennsylvania has blocked the state's stricter voter inch d. law. ruling means that voters in pennsylvania will not have to show a state-approved i.d. to cast ballots on election day. the judge said he was concerned that the law could prevent some people from voting. the stricter voter i.d. laws in four states remain but tougher laws in at least six other states were either shelved or watered down, including those in a few swing states. >>> america
